History of Winter Leagues

When the Club opened in 1987 a league programme was set up. Each of the 20 leagues had 8 to 10 teams competing, each allocated with a letter of the alphabet A to K. Each league was indentified by the day and time of play.

The following year members of the Tuesday 7.30pm league suggested names should be attached to Team letters to help team members remember their team letter with the example of A for Antelopes and B for Buffalos. So the Animal League was created. The League Secretary, Phil Smetham, considering this a good idea, with the help of catalogues extended this to all other leagues thus forming the named leagues as they exist to this day.

  • Mondays -       Feathered League, Floral League, Aquatic League
  • Tuesdays -      Butterfly League, Feline League, Fruit and Veg League
  • Wednesdays - Canine League, Insect League,
  • Thursdays -     DIY League, Confectionary League, Animal League
  • Fridays -         Musical League, Winged League, Clothing League
  • Saturdays -     Motorised League Sundays - Colourist League

Over the years the increasing number of teams registering has resulted in many leagues becoming structured as Two Divisions thereby developing a very strong weekly programme of competitive bowling that still continues.
