  1. Each player has a number relating to their starting position on the ladder
  2. A player may only challenge one or two places above their position.
  3. A challenge consists of a singles match of 4 ends with 4 bowls each, the winner being the player achieving the highest number of shots.
  4. In the event of a tie, a 1 end ‘Tie Breaker’ of ‘2 bowls’ each will decide the winner. Casting the jack & placing the mat will be decided by the toss of a coin, the winner of which has the choice of playing first or giving the mat away.
  5. If the challenger wins, the players ‘swap’ places on the ladder. If the challenger loses, positions will remain as before.
  6. A ‘Killed end’ with the JACK leaving the rink boundary incurs a ‘2 shot’ penalty.
  7. A player MUST accept a challenge unless they have:

         a. Accepted 2 challenges in that session.

         b. Already been challenged and are waiting to play that player.

         c. Already challenged a player and are waiting to play.

        d. Just beaten the ‘challenging’ player.

     8. On dates & times as selected by the ’organiser’ each player ‘may’ be allowed to play 1 ‘wild card’ challenge to any player at any position on the ladder.

     9. All players will act as ‘markers’ and if necessary will be assisted by the coaches/assistants.

   10. A losing player will be required to mark the next match during that session.

The Ladder will be updated, recording progress within that weeks session. Winning and gaining a higher position at the end of each session will be entered  in ‘RED’.

THE KENT BOWLS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SCHEME

Junior Event held at Mote ParkThe Kent Bowls Youth Development Project, a partnership between the Kent County Bowling Association, the Kent County Indoor Bowling Association and the "Sunderland Scheme" staged a major event at Mote Park Indoor Bowls Club, in Maidstone on Sunday 13th March 2011.There were sixty four young bowlers, girls and boys, from across the county invited to attend the skills day with ten Kent clubs being represented. Those ten clubs were with number of juniors in brackets: Angel (9); Ashford (8); Bromley (6); Cyphers (8); Deangate Ridge (9); Folkestone (1) Mote Park (12); Royals; (2) Swale (4); White Oak (5)

The event organised by Richard Boorman, Director/Secretary of the "Sunderland Scheme" with a support group gave the youngsters the opportunity to compete for the 'Sunderland Scheme' trophies and prize money. The Sunderland Scheme was introduced into the Kent junior bowls programme as an incentive for junior players to develop their skills and promote the sport of bowls to young girls and boys from Kent. The scheme itself is in recognition of the World War 2 aircraft which was built in Kent, and the work force in the factory building these fine aircraft, included Richards's Uncle. With Richard's background also being in engineering and his great enthusiasm for coaching young bowlers, the link was made and the scheme introduced.

The day started at 9.30am with the youngsters being split equally into two groups; juniors and seniors. They were presented with a series of skills tests which were all individually marked at every stage. The skills were all aspects of bowling to which they would be subjected to in a game of bowls. The skills included 'casting a jack' to an exact position on the green, bowling around short woods to a hidden jack, and of course the key skill of drawing your bowl to the jack. With each competitor having been marked for each exercise, those marks were carried forward in the form of "place points" to the afternoon session when they would be faced with a series of five end singles matches. These matches were firstly played on a 'round robin' basis with eight groups in both the senior and junior sections. The top player from each group progressed through to the quarter final with a winner from both the senior and junior group being decided. The points earned from the afternoon singles play were then converted to "place points" and added to the morning skills points to decide the overall winners of the day, and winners of the Sunderland Scheme trophies.

In the junior skills event Bradley Chalklin (Angel IBC) was placed third, Alex Shelly (Cyphers) second and William Moulton (White Oak) was placed first.

In the senior skills event Andrew Roger (Deangate Ridge IBC) was in third place, Peter Murphy (Deangate Ridge) was second but Jamie Ereira (Cyphers IBC) was placed first.

In the junior singles Bradley Chalklin (Angel), Scott Hudson (Angel), Jake Farmer (Bromley) and William Moulton (White Oak) progressed through to the semi finals with William Moulton overcoming Jake Farmer in the final.

In the senior singles Jamie Ereira (Cyphers), Robert and Emily Ferguson (Mote Park) and Adam McIllmurray (Cyphers) made the semi finals with Jamie Ereira finally overcoming the challenge of Emily Ferguson, who had defeated older brother Robert in the semi final.

p1020012 smallThis eventually meant that Bradley Chalklin (Angel) was overall runner up in the junior's competition behind the winner William Moulton (White Oak), and in the senior event Adam McIllmurray (Cyphers) was runner up to Jamie Ereira (Cyphers). All four of these were recommended for entry into the EYBDS Regional School of Excellence to be held at Horsham IBC in April.

The event at Mote Park was attended by the Chairman of the EYBDS, Mr Peter Arnold, President of the Kent County Indoor Bowling Association, Mr Lionel Hanmore and President of the Kent County Bowling Association, Mr Mick Bannister. Sharon and John Evenden together with John Oliver, who are all heavily involved with work in the indoor and outdoor under 25 sections, were responsible for keeping the marking system up to date after every stage.

William Moulton(Whiteoak) winner of the Junior EventAt the conclusion of the day William Moulton and Jamie Ereira were presented with their 'Sunderland Scheme' trophies by the President of Kent County Bowling Association Mr Mick Bannister. The long day ended at 6.30pm and the large adult attendance was left to reflect on the vast amount of chips and coca cola that had been consumed by the juniors, which had obviously been responsible for keeping the youngsters going for more than nine hours.
